A nice shot of Viennese courage

I am generally not among those who are optimistic about the possibility of reform in the Church. The institution moves as a glacially slow pace, even as the general pace of social change in the world becomes more and more rapid. However, even glaciers melt, and large chunks sometimes break off. The cardinal-archbishop of Vienna has said publicly what would have been unthinkable even a year ago. And in doing so, he has aimed his gun at a retired, but still very powerful, cardinal and the entire Roman curia. This is, if not unheard of, at least not the sort of thing that happens often.

Another fascinating article on the Schonborn is contained in the always interesting and erudite Queering the Church blog:  http://queering-the-church.com/blog/?p=7822#more-7822

Thank God that some Church officials are finally showing some common sense. I am very heartened by the words of Cardinal Schonborn. The articles that you linked are excellent.

Call me cynical: He will, no doubt, be silenced.

Will he be silenced? That of course is the test. So far, there has been not a word of criticism or distancing, let alone silencing, from official sources. The longer the silence continues, the more likely it is that this is indeed a part of a more general softening of attitude.

The glaciers may well be melting.
