But of course B16 and his cadre are never, ever going to admit guilt or take responsibility. That's just not how it works, either in Church or State.
Shieffer alludes to the Protestant Reformation, and that makes me wonder if this present crisis will end in a new one. The more intransigent the Vatican is, the more likely such an outcome will be, perhaps.
And then there's that "prophecy" about the popes, and B16 is next to last in that list. I don't hold much with that kind of silly stuff - but I could see it happening, when all this gets played out. Who knows.

Who knows, indeed. Only God, and he seems not to be talking. The institution is in a fine pickle, of its own making.
